Fleet and Vehicle Manager

Hi-Way Paving is a dynamic and growing mid-sized heavy civil construction company specializing in projects that involve large amounts of concrete paving. The Fleet and Vehicle Manager is responsible for the strategic management, maintenance, and utilization of our construction equipment and vehicle fleet. This role requires a strong understanding of equipment and vehicles used in construction, a focus on safety and compliance, and excellent organizational and leadership skills. Ideally, the individual filling this role is located within 50 miles of one of our key job sites (Charlotte, NC or Nashville, TN); however, some travel (up to 50%) may be necessary.

Responsibilities

Fleet Management

• Develop and execute a comprehensive fleet management strategy, including equipment acquisition, maintenance, and disposal.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to equipment operation, safety, and environmental standards.
• Evaluate and recommend fleet enhancements, replacements, or modifications to meet project needs and cost-effectiveness.
• Lead the management of telematics connections across the entire fleet.
• Oversee the fleet budget, monitor expenses, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment usage (and assignment), maintenance, and repairs for heavy equipment, company-owned vehicles, and light-duty equipment (e.g., saws, drills).
• Collaborate with the Operations team (VP Operations, VP Engineering, Project Managers, and Superintendents) to allocate equipment and vehicles to projects efficiently.

Maintenance and Repairs

• Establish preventive maintenance schedules for all equipment and vehicles, ensuring adherence to manufacturer recommendations.
• Coordinate and manage routine inspections, repairs, and maintenance services.
• Develop and implement maintenance protocols to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
• Manage relationships with third-party maintenance providers and negotiate service contracts.
• Troubleshoot and address equipment and vehicle breakdowns promptly to minimize project disruptions.

Safety and Compliance

• Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all equipment and vehicles comply with safety regulations and company policies.
• Conduct safety training for vehicle and equipment operators and maintain safety records.
• Monitor telematics data on equipment and vehicles to identify and address opportunities for safer operation and procedures.
• Keep up-to-date with industry regulations and standards, implementing necessary changes to maintain compliance.

Team Leadership

• Manage a Fleet Coordinator as well as work closely and collaborate with a team of mechanics and maintenance technicians.
• Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify training needs.
• Foster a collaborative and productive work environment within the maintenance team.
• Provide overall leadership on the Equipment and Vehicle Fleet Team and Operations Team.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, fleet management, or a related field, preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of fleet and equipment management experience in the construction industry.
• Strong knowledge of heavy equipment, trucks, and construction vehicles.
• Familiarity with equipment maintenance software and systems (e.g., HCSS, Vista/Viewpoint).
• Excellent leadership and team management skills.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and practices in the construction industry (i.e., OSHA, DOT, etc.).
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel to project sites as needed up to 50% of the time.
